GROUND ZERO & U2

The Twisted Wreck
There was still dust over all the buildings nearby. It was almost surreal running our fingers through the dust, knowing that it was once part of the mighty Twin Towers. It was a very eerie feeling touching it. Most of the buildings in the area were closed down, some with signs saying that they were closed for air-quality testing. It was also a little eerie peeking through the barricades and fences seeing all the emergency vehicles with their lights all flashing. It was as if it all just happened, rather than being over month and a half afertwards.
There were police just about everywhere we went. And it wasn't just NYPD. There were cops from all over the state. It was funny- I saw two people ask one of the out-of-town cops where a certain street was and he shook his head saying he didn't know, turning to his partner to ask him. But once we got down to ground zero, you couldn't turn and not see a police car or a policeman. I'm even pretty sure I saw some policemen from other states. There were some wearing those cowboy-like hats. I have no idea where those guys were from. But it was nice seeing them all talking to each other.
Another thing that was noticeably unsettling was seeing planes flying right over Manhatttan. I thought that it was a no-fly zone, but I guess not. There was some pretty good sized jets flying directly above us. It was an eerie feeling. I'm sure everybody around us was thinking the same thing. In fact, it was really amazing at Ground Zero. Despite there being so many people there, it was very quiet. You could almost tell what everyone was thinking, feeling, by the looks on their faces. Everyone seemed to be beside themselves in awe.
All in all, I'm definitely glad we went down to see it. My only regret was that I never got to be down there when they were both standing. I guess it was one of those things where you always see it but you never make an effort to actually go there. It's still hard to comprehend that they're gone, even a month and a half after it happened. It's probably just one of those things that will never fully sink in. It will always be weird looking at the naked skyline, without the Twin Towers. They belong there. It's not the same without them.
