NY/NJ Metrostars Home Opener
Oh yeah, there was a soccer game too
|
I always say that I go to these games for the atmosphere- the people, the excitement. The fact the a soccer
game is being played is almost insignificant. But I have to say, this was one of the most exciting games I've
ever seen. Well at least certain parts were. The Metros kicked off their 2001 season in style by
treating their fans to an incredible game against the New England Revolution. The score was deadlocked at nil when
halftime rolled around. In the second half, Clint Mathis put the Metros on the board 1-0 with a free kick that
found the net.

The Revolution later tied the game in the 73rd minute. I was afraid we were going to have overtime, and I was
so cold that I just wanted someone to score- any team! By that point, I didn't care who won I just wanted to leave!!
But in the 92nd minute, with seconds left to play, Mark Chung fired a shot that nailed the crossbar and bounced back, but
Adolfo Valencia took air and headed the ball back into the net. It was an amazing finish. The whole section was
going nuts. The Metros held on for another minute to preserve their 2-1 victory.
